Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center (PNGC) is offering a Pilot AI Learning Series this semester. Now underway, it brings together opportunities for discussion and practical training for researchers, trainees, and staff interested in applying AI tools to biomedical research and administrative workflows.
All sessions are held in person, with required registration and limited space. Dates, session details, and registration links are posted on the PNGC website.
Practical AI Seminars
The seminar track is designed to be hands-on and immediately useful. Sessions focus on practical tools, workflows, and common pitfalls, with emphasis on when AI helps and when it can mislead.
Upcoming topics include:
- Machine learning in GWAS for Alzheimer’s: methods, gaps, and next steps
- Using AlphaGenome: an introductory practical session
Materials and examples from previous seminars are available on GitHub, in the PNGC training repository.
AI Ethics Journal Club
The journal club focuses on ethical and policy questions that arise when AI is applied in Alzheimer’s disease and broader biomedical research. Registered attendees receive a short reading list (2–3 concise papers) in advance of each session to support focused discussion.
Planned themes include:
- Bias and fairness in AI models trained on Alzheimer’s research datasets
- Ethical use of AI for literature-based knowledge extraction
- Responsible use of generative AI in scientific writing and grant development
- Data governance and consent in large academic AI research projects
Some sessions may count toward NIH training requirements related to Scientific Rigor and Reproducibility and/or Responsible Conduct of Research (pending confirmation).
